Imagine the unlimited potential of a human race that is fueled by the love and kindness we hold for each other...
Just, call me up, 'cause I will always be there...
The movie, "Trolls," is a captivating story about the proverbial search for happiness. I won't give away too much, because I highly recommend that you watch it!
Here is a brief run-down: The main protagonist is an overly optimistic troll named Poppy. She embarks on a heroic adventure to help her friends. At a turning point in her quest, Poppy feels hopelessly defeated, and looses every last drop of optimism in her being. Poppy's friend, Branch, comes to her side, and sings to her.
The song he chooses to sing is a beautiful cover of Cyndi Lauper's, "True Colors."
"You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged, oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
The darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small
Show me a smile then
Don't be unhappy
Can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
This world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Just, call me up
'Cause I will always be there
And I see your true colors
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you"
Branch reminded her of who she already was. And, that reminder gave Poppy the strength to heal herself. And, a simple reminder can go a long way!
Empathy is a beautiful gift that we are all capable of learning. It means being able to understand and share the feelings of another living being. It may seem daunting to open up to the pain of others when you are going through tremendous pain yourself. But, being empathetic doesn't mean that you are going to carry the weight of another persons emotions. It means that you see another person and you are aware of whatever they are going through. Empathy is connection.
Still not sure "how" to be empathetic? Thats OK you don't need to know the how! The way we empathize is different for every single person. It's just like riding a bike, tying your shoes, washing your car, applying makeup...we each do things in our own, unique style.
Heres a fun movie quote to further emphasize my point (on not needing to know the HOW):
Branch: Wait, wait, wait. What’s your plan?
Poppy: I just told you. Rescue everyone and make it home safely.
Branch: Okay, that’s not a plan, that’s a wish list.
Poppy had no idea how she would rescue her friends. She set out on an intention, and she let her intuition lead her to the solution. In the same way, you just need to understand what empathy is and set the intention to become more empathetic. And, the universe will guide you towards that point of focus.
All we really need is someone to say a version of, "I see you, and I believe in you." That way, we are better able to harness the willpower to carry-on.
The moral of the story is that we are better able to meet life's challenges when we can empathize with each other (while offering a loving nudge here and there). How could you benefit from giving and receiving more empathy in your life?
